Chinese athletes celebrate National Day with victories in Asian Games

Chinese athletes won 19 of the 35 gold medals awarded at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, on Sunday, the day marking the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The most epic victory secured by China on the day was in the badminton men's team final. The losses of Shi Yuqi, Wang Weikeng and Wang Chang in the first two matches put China in a desperate 2-0 trailing. However, Li Shifeng, Liu Yuchen and Ou Xuanyi won the following two matches to tie the score 2-2.

In the fifth and final matches, Weng Hongyang beat Mithun Manjunath 2-0 (21-12 and 21-4) for the host to come back and pocket the title.

Li Fabin dominated the weightlifting men's 61-kilogram event by setting a new Asian Games record at 143 kilograms in snatch and 310 kilograms in total. He built a solid lead after lifting 137 kilograms in his first snatch attempt and then added the weight to 141 and 143 kilograms respectively with the following two attempts. Though he only lifted his first jerk-and-clean attempt of 167 kilograms, it was good enough to win the gold.

Li was not the only record-setting Chinese weightlifter in the Asian Games on Sunday. Chen Lijun broke the Asian Games records in the men's 67-kilogram event of in both snatch (150 kilograms) and total (330 kilograms).

Zhang Xinqiu of China refreshed a shooting record with 47/50 in the shooting trap women's final, surpassing the Asian record of 46/50 set by her compatriot Deng Weiyun four years ago.

Chinese kurash athlete Yu Dan made history by becoming the first of her country to win the event's title in the Asian Games as she defeated Donya Aghaei of Iran in the final on Sunday.

Chinese divers offered their dominance of the sport as a gift to the country on the National Day. Chen Yiwen and Chang Yani won the women's 3-meter synchronized springboard gold with 335.73 points. Yang Hao and Lian Junjie beat the South Korean pair Yi Jaeg-yeong and Kim Yeong-nam by over 100 points to win the title in the men's 10-meter synchronized platform event.

Fan Zhendong, Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha gave supporters a cause to celebrate in the table tennis events. Fan and Wang swept Jang Woo-jin and Lim Jong-hoon 4-0 in the men's doubles final while Sun defeated Hina Hayata 4-1 in the women's singles final, adding another two golds for China.

Wang Jianan, Zheng Ninali and Feng Bin carried on the excellent performances of Chinese athletes on the track and field. Wang claimed the men's long jump title with 8.22 meters. Zheng got the women's heptathlon title. Feng had the women's discus throw gold while setting the Asian Games record of the event with 67.93 meters.
