A Chinese scientific expedition comprising 18 members reached the summit of Mount Cho Oyu at 8,201 meters above sea level on October 1. It was the first time a Chinese scientific expedition had scaled a peak exceeding 8,000 meters in altitude other than Mount Qomolangma, the world's highest summit. The 18-member team has been commissioned to set up an automatic weather station, measure snow and ice thickness, extract ice core samples and collect rock samples at the summit.
