The southeast of Australia was sweltering in a heat wave on Sunday, raising the risk of bushfires and prompting authorities to issue fire bans for huge swaths of Australia's most populous state, New South Wales.
The nation's weather forecaster said that temperatures in some locations will be up to 12 degrees Celsius above average, with Sydney expected to hit 36 degrees Celsius.
According to forecasts, the temperature at Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport at 2 p.m. was 34.6 degrees Celsius, more than 11 degrees above the October mean maximum temperature.
Following the recent announcement of an El Nino meteorological event, which is often connected with extreme events such as wildfires, cyclones and droughts, Australia faces a high-risk bushfire season.
State Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib declared the beginning of an official bushfire danger period, with the "scorching" heat lifting the risk for the coming week.
To decrease the risk of bushfires, fire authorities declared nine total burn bans for sections of the state on Sunday.
