Tropical Storm Philippe is threatening to unleash heavy overnight rains and flash flooding on the Leeward Islands before eventually recurving out into the central Atlantic where it could gain hurricane status around midweek, forecasters say.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 11 p.m. Sunday that Philippe was about 155 miles (245 kilometers) east of Guadeloupe or about 190 miles (310 km) east-southeast of Barbuda. Top sustained winds were at 50 mph (85 kph) and Philippe was crawling to the west-northwest at 5 mph (7 kph).

Antigua and Barbuda were under tropical storm warning. The hurricane center advised residents of the northern Leeward Islands to keep an eye on the storm's track, as the core of Philippe is expected to pass near or just northeast of the islands on Monday and Monday night.

According to the advisory, heavy rains from Philippe could cause isolated to scattered flash floods across Barbuda and Antigua through Tuesday.

Strong wind shear is predicted to prevent Philippe from strengthening in the following days, but shifting conditions may allow it to become a hurricane later this week as it swings out over the central subtropical Atlantic.
