Passenger demand in China during the 2023 Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday period - between September 29 to October 6 - is expected to reach new highs, as the country witnessed a robust rebound in travel volume.
Latest data shows that a total of 56.7 million trips were made by rail, highway, water and civil aviation on the sixth day of the eight-day holiday period, posting a year-on-year increase of 58.4 percent.
Among the different travel modes, railway travel has become one of the most in-demand.
On September 29, the first day of the holiday season, more than 20 million passenger trips were made by rail alone, accounting for over 30 percent of the total passenger volume that day. Rail transport soared 108.2 percent from 2022's numbers.
The domestic traveling spree is expected to continue until the end of the Golden Week period.
For the entire holiday period, it is estimated that 2.05 billion journeys will be made with all means of transport, with the daily average trips registering an 11.5 percent increase over the same period in 2019, according to the Ministry of Transport.
The country's railway system is forecast to deliver as many as 190 million passenger trips during the 12-day holiday travel rush from September 27 to October 8, said the China State Railway Group.
