A total of 754 million domestic trips were made across China in the first seven days of China's "golden-week" holiday, up 78.9 percent year on year, Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism said on Friday.
Domestic tourism revenue surged to 668.09 billion yuan ($92.8 billion), reflecting a year-on-year growth of 132.6 percent, official data shows.
The National Day holiday, dubbed "golden week" in China, normally runs for seven days, but this year it was linked with the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival and extended to eight days, from September 29 to October 6.
Chinese citizens are making the most of the eight-day holiday period by embarking on their travel plans. On the first day of the holiday, China's railways handled about 20.1 million passenger trips, setting a new record for daily trip numbers and surpassing 20 million for the first time in history.
Data from Fliggy, Alibaba's travel platform shows that domestic trip bookings increased by nearly 600 percent year on year, while orders for overseas trips saw a rise of more than 2,000 percent.
During the holiday period, the tourism industry has seen a consistent rise in popularity, marked by a significant uptick in various activities, including enjoying urban leisure and discovering rural destinations.
Provinces like Guangdong, Hubei, Jiangsu, and others have hosted a diverse range of events, such as lantern festivals, showcases of intangible cultural heritage, and immersive garden tours, all of which have drawn in a considerable number of tourists.
