From the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics to the 2022 Winter Games and now the Hangzhou Asian Games, the main themes at the opening and closing ceremonies in China's international sporting events have been radically transformed, says Sha Xiaolan, chief director for the Asian Games ceremonies. He reflects on China's departure from the "human wave" strategy, with a shift toward a more confident artistic expression and a heightened creativity. This year, his team is once again pushing boundaries to introduce innovative elements like the stadium floor screen, an endeavor rarely seen in other international ceremonies.
