UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "condemns in the strongest terms the attack by Hamas against Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip and central Israel," Guterres' spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement on Saturday.

"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned for the civilian population and urges maximum restraint," the statement said, adding that Guterres urges all diplomatic efforts to "avoid a wider conflagration."
