Argentina is popularly known as the "world granary and meat capital." For a time, however, its dilapidated railway infrastructure was impeding the country's ability to transport produce from its northern agricultural regions to its ports for export. In 2014, during a visit to Argentina, Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the launch of a project aimed at renovating the Belgrano Freight Railway. The improvement to this vital rail link has, by reducing domestic transport costs and travel times, boosted Argentina's competitive edge on the international farm produce market and ensured that an abundance of Argentine food can reach Chinese dining tables.
