The Afghan caretaker government will build houses for families who lost their homes in the powerful quakes that struck west Afghanistan's Herat and neighboring Farah and Badghis provinces on Saturday, acting Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has said.

Baradar made the remarks while visiting the quake-affected region in Herat on Monday.

Two deadly earthquakes, according to China Earthquake Networks Center, each with a magnitude of 6.2 followed by several aftershocks, rocked west Afghanistan with an epicenter in Zanda Jan district of Herat province on Saturday, leaving at least 2,053 dead and thousands more injured.

Between 1,200 to 1,500 residential houses, according to Baradar, were destroyed in Saturday's quakes in Herat.

"The Islamic Emirate will build standard houses for families whose houses have been destroyed in the earthquakes," state-run Bakhtar news agency quoted Baradar as saying.
