The Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco issued a strong condemnation of a violent attack that saw a car ram into the lobby of its visa office on Monday afternoon and said it reserves the right to pursue who is responsible for the attack.

"An unidentified person violently crashed into our consulate, posing a serious threat to life and safety to the staff and wreaking havoc on the facilities and properties of the consulate," the consulate said in a statement.

The consulate has lodged solemn representations with the U.S. side to quickly find out the motive behind the attack.

The driver was shot and killed, the Associated Press reported, quoting Kathryn Winters from the San Francisco Police Department at a news conference. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the hospital, Winters said.

Winters said they didn't know why the vehicle crashed into the building or how many people were inside at the time, but they didn't have reports of other injuries. Police are working and coordinating with investigators from the U.S. Department of State and the Chinese consulate.

The consulate later said in a notice that its visa office will be temporarily closed as of Tuesday, and it will inform the public when the services resume.
