"Bluebeard's Castle," the famous one-act opera by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, has come to the stage in the Chinese capital, with an adaptation seen through the lens of a woman suffering from dementia and her caretaker husband, Bluebeard.

The new production, dedicated to a theme of love and loneliness, was adapted by director Daisy Evans along with the music arranged by Stephen Higgins, the founders of the British opera company Theatre of Sound.

"My grandmother was diagnosed with senile dementia when I was involved in the commissioning of the music piece for the newly written libretto," Stephen Higgins recalled. "She probably couldn't remember who I was, but I still remembered her childhood stories and some of the melodies we had listened to together."

The opera company made something of a splash with its inspiring changes to the narrative of Bartok's mysterious classic, where the original plot centered around a vast, dark hall of a castle containing seven locked doors.

Under this latest arrangement, the castle is transformed into a happy home for Judith and Bluebeard, a place containing beautiful memories for both, despite the fact that Judith later suffers from dementia. Two Chinese child actors play the role of Judith in her childhood years.

Accompanied by the London Sinfonietta, "Bluebeard's Castle" was staged on October 7 and 8 at the Beijing Comedy Theater.
