A powerful magnitude-6.3 earthquake followed by strong aftershocks in western Afghanistan killed more than 2,400 people on October 7 local time.

According to local authorities, many villages have been "utterly destroyed" in the hardest-hit Herat province. Naim Shah, a local villager who lost his son in the earthquake, told CGTN Stringer that about 100 houses were destroyed and over 1,000 people died in his village. "My home was entirely destroyed; nothing remains," said Shah.
