Carlos Alcaraz's aspirations of dethroning Novak Djokovic from the summit of the ATP rankings before the conclusion of 2023 have been dealt a severe blow following his unexpected loss at the Shanghai Masters.

In a breathtaking twist of fate, Grigor Dimitrov achieved the pinnacle of his season with a monumental victory over top seed Alcaraz. The match was a roller-coaster ride, with the Bulgarian ultimately prevailing in a thrilling 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 battle late Wednesday night.

Despite Alcaraz being a Wimbledon champion and having defeated Dimitrov three times in the past, he seemed to be off his game during this showdown. Although he managed to take the opening set in just under an hour, the Spaniard struggled to find his rhythm.

Dimitrov, on the other hand, capitalized on this opportunity, breaking Alcaraz's serve twice in the second set. The deciding set saw Alcaraz facing another setback as his serve was broken once again in the third game, following an unforced error on his part.

"I'm still here, I'm not going anywhere," said Dimitrov after dumping out Alcaraz. "I stayed in the match, that was the first thing, especially after the first set. In the third set, it was a bit cat and mouse.

"I knew I had to apply constant pressure on him. I think we both played a solid set. He made a few errors and I was very solid and served well when I had to."

Alcaraz's departure from the tournament marked his earliest exit since May, when he was eliminated in the last-32 stage of the Rome Open. The loss has put a big dent in his ATP ranking, leaving him a staggering 2,240 points behind Djokovic.

With this substantial gap, it appears that the Serbian maestro is poised to secure the coveted year-end world No. 1 title, unless Alcaraz manages to mount an extraordinary comeback in the remainder of the season.

To his credit, Alcaraz has shown his resilience by refusing to dwell on his latest setback. Instead, the determined world No. 2 is eager to get back on the practice court.

"I always say that you can improve more from the defeats than the wins. After this trip, I took a lot of lessons to improve, to be better," Alcaraz said.

"Even if I didn't make the quarterfinals in Shanghai, I think I'm playing great tennis. So I have to practice at my 100 percent in the weeks before Basel. That is the next tournament for me, so I'll try to make my best in that tournament."
