The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) deployed combat aircraft to follow and monitor a U.S. Navy P-8A patrol and reconnaissance plane that passed through the Taiwan Straits on Thursday.
Shi Yi, spokesman for the PLA's Eastern Theater Command, said in a statement on Thursday that the response was in accordance with the country's laws and regulations and that the Chinese army "remains on high alert at all times to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and regional peace and stability."
