The Kanchipuram silk industry was established by the Pallavas, who ruled this region in southern India from the 3rd to the 9th centuries. Kanchipuram was also the capital city of this ancient dynasty known as great patrons of art and culture, and especially encouraged the production of silk. The art of silk-making was a gift bestowed by merchants and travelers from China.
