The Los Angeles Dodgers will have a lot of homework to do during the Major League Baseball (MLB) offseason to figure out why they were swept in the National League Division Series (NLDS) despite a 100-win regular season.

"I've got to do a better job of figuring out a way to get our guys prepared for the postseason. I'll own that," the team's manager Dave Roberts said. "The regular season, I think we do a great job. But the last couple of postseasons it just hasn't gone well for us and so I've got to figure it out."

The Dodgers lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-2, 4-2 and 4-2 in the three NLDS games. Roberts removed Brusdar Graterol after two hitless innings of relief pitching in Game 2 and then was booed by home fans at Dodgers Stadium. It's his eighth season of managing the team in 2023. They never missed the playoffs during his tenure, but were eliminated in the first round for two straight years.

However, there was very limited for a manager to do from a dugout. The players were the ones actually performing on the field, and, the Dodgers did a poor job against the Diamondbacks for good reasons.

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw allowed six runs in the first inning in Game 1. Deadline signing Lance Lynn was blown four home runs in the third inning in Game 3. Rookie Bobby Miller made his playoffs debut by starting Game 2, but he didn't even make it to the third inning after conceding three runs in the first one.

Unfortunately, the above were nearly all the Dodgers had for their rotation in addition to other rookies. Neither could they count on hitting to make up for the defense. All of their 100-runs-batted-in sluggers, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy and J.D. Martinez, failed to impress as they did during the regular season.

Injuries played a painfully big role in the Dodgers' lack of force as they cost the team Walker Buehler, Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May, Daniel Hudson, Blake Treinen and Gavin Lux for the season. Even Kershaw spent six weeks on the injury list. At 36, he pitched on one-year deals in both of the past seasons and will become a free agent again after the World Series.

"I'm not sure how it's going to look," Kershaw said. "Just obviously a horrible way to end it personally. But that's not ultimately not important. It's just how I didn't help the team win the series. That's the most disappointing part."
