Hypocrisy and selfishness never a solution to Palestine-Israel conflict

On October 7, a fresh wave of violence erupted between Israel and Palestine. As of October 15, this particular bout of conflict had already claimed the lives of over 4,000 individuals from both sides. The intensity of the clashes and the resulting casualties marks a rare occurrence in recent years for the Israeli-Palestinian situation, significantly impacting the overall regional landscape in the Middle East.

One of the key factors that sparked the recent Israeli-Palestinian conflict was the United States' disregard for the political aspirations of the Palestinian people and its forceful promotion of normalizing relations between Israel and Arab nations.

As early as 2002, Saudi Arabia proposed the Arab Peace Initiative, which called for Israel to make concessions on the Palestinian issue in exchange for normalized relations with Arab countries. However, in practice, the Palestinians feel that the United States has abandoned the "Palestinians first, then Arab nations" approach to negotiations, further sidelining the Palestinian cause and sparking intense anger among the Palestinian people.

In previous Middle East peace negotiations, the United States played a role of indulgence and tacit approval regarding issues such as the status of East Jerusalem, the right of return for Palestinian refugees, and Jewish settlements in the West Bank. It allowed Israel to occupy Palestinian land, which undermined the foundation of the Israeli-Palestinian peace dialogue and eroded the Palestinians' confidence in the prospects of peace between the two sides.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proclaimed that "the Jewish people have an exclusive and inalienable right to all parts of the land of Israel." Shlomo Ben-Ami, a former Israeli foreign minister, believes that Prime Minister Netanyahu's fanatic government has hindered any political progress for the Palestinians. Netanyahu once claimed to have his "two hands firmly on the steering wheel." But now it seems that the wheel has slipped from his control.

Another reason contributing to the current round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the abandonment of efforts by the United States to restart the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, leaving the Palestinian people increasingly disillusioned with their hopes for establishing their own state. After the unsuccessful mediation of the Israeli-Palestinian issue by then-U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in 2014, neither the Trump administration nor the Biden administration initiated new peace talks.

Meanwhile, as the tensions between Israel and Palestine intensify, there have been a series of changes in the positions of both sides. Although they still adhere to the "two-state solution" as the basis for negotiations, the content of the solution has undergone significant shifts. The territorial scope of "Palestine" has been greatly reduced, and the trend of unequal bilateral status between Israel and the future "Palestinian state" has become increasingly apparent.

Facing intensifying tensions between Palestine and Israel, the U.S. has never reflected upon its Middle East policy. Rather, it has started to blame the Palestinian people, labeling the Palestine armed forces as "terrorists." U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken blatantly asked Arab nations to make peace with Israel for a united front against Hamas.

To shield its responsibility, Washington is even pouring dirty water on other countries. Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that the Biden administration's $6 billion "ransom" to Iran has "sponsored" attacks against Israel. Some Americans have also accused Iran as the "culprit" behind the ongoing conflicts. Wang Jin, an associate professor at Northwest University of China, believed that the Palestine-Israel conflicts should not be regarded as a tool for domestic political gains or a weapon to attack other countries.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that the fundamental reason for the development of the Palestinian-Israeli situation today is that the Palestinian people's right to statehood has been put on hold for a long time, their right to existence has not been implemented for a long time, and their right to return has been ignored for a long time.

The U.S., as an important party in addressing Palestinian-Israeli conflicts, has neglected its moral responsibilities and is even seeking to take advantage of the tensions for selfish gains. This will only intensify antagonism in the region. As regional peace and stability are at peril and local people are facing a humanitarian crisis, creating favorable conditions for Palestine and Israel back to the negotiating table and finding a way to enduring peace is the right choice for a responsible power.
