The 2023 Finswimming World Cup Golden Final opened in Jiangle County, southeast China's Fujian Province, on Thursday, drawing participants from 17 countries and regions, with 26 gold medals in senior and junior categories up for grabs on the opening day, marking the tournament's return to China after 12 years.
According to Liu Qing, an official of the Water Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, Jiangle has served as the training base for China's national finswimming team since 2017.
The team has clinched 105 gold, 84 silver and 46 bronze medals and broken multiple world and Asian records at major tournaments including the World Championships and the World Cup down the stretch.
Local competitor Zeng Yanghan is one of the finswimmers to watch in Jiangle. The 400m bi-fins national champion in 2022 will participate in the 200m and 400m bi-fins events.
Zeng is looking forward to his maiden international competition on home soil. "It feels like a dream come true when I learned that I would compete in a high-level international tournament on home soil. I hope to go all out for a good result," the 18-year-old said.
The event will conclude on Friday.
