Hangzhou Asian Para Games: Leading regional sports official discusses need for 'inclusivity'

Ahead of the opening of the fourth Asian Para Games, our reporter Zhang Siran talks to Majid Rashed, President of the Asian Paralympic Committee to understand how the event contributes to building a fairer, more inclusive Asia. 

ZHANG SIRAN CGTN Reporter "Thank you for having this interview with CGTN. You arrived in Hangzhou a few days ago. What were your first impressions of the city and the preparations of the 4th Asian Para Games?"

MAJID RASHED President of the Asian Paralympic Committee "The environment and atmosphere is very positive and everyone excited and happy starting from the volunteers to the employees of the airport. And the warm hospitality and welcome from everyone here, gives you the impression that we are about to witness one of the best games ever, not just in Asia, but in the world."

ZHANG SIRAN CGTN Reporter "The Hangzhou Games is themed 'Hearts Meet, Dreams Shine'. How will the event give athletes opportunities to reflect the theme?"

MAJID RASHED President of the Asian Paralympic Committee "The slogan is the real meaning of the person with disabilities and athletes. My dream is inside. I always dream of equal opportunities, of you to believe me, as family or as community and government. So in these Games, when we meet with our love, with our hearts, my dreams will shine. The sport was the fastest tools we use to prove our ability to show that we are not a disabled, we are able to do. The door was wide. I compete no matter what is my disabilities is within the rules of the sports. I show my strength, I show my courage, I show my determination."

ZHANG SIRAN CGTN Reporter "How important is the Asian Para Games for the development of inclusivity and equality in society? What impact will the Games have outside sport?"

MAJID RASHED President of the Asian Paralympic Committee "The vision is to have inclusive Asia through sports. The impact of these games. First of all, the changing of the mind. And the second thing is to update the policies and the rules of the country within the government. Equal opportunities in different areas, in education, in health programs, environments, accessibility, social activities, to make everything at the same level and equal to everyone. The third things is to implement it and create and friendly and accessible city to everyone."
