China has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing green development in support of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. CGTN's Gao Ang speaks to international organizations and industry experts in the energy and electricity sectors, to gain insights into China's green initiatives.
Official data show that since the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed, China's major power companies have undertaken some 260 major foreign direct investment projects.
Over 30 percent of these projects are related to new energy power generation, mainly in solar and wind power.
At an electric power supply industry conference, experts and scholars from international organizations shared their perspectives on China's green efforts.
ANGELA WILKINSON Secretary General & CEO, World Energy Council "Regional cooperation and regional integration of electricity grids is really important. It brings advantages around efficiency and resiliency and flexibility. I think that's the essence of the green Belt and Road Initiative. It's how can not just China take care of its own domestic energy needs, but how can it also encourage and facilitate energy transition in its neighborhood."
SAIFUR RAHMAN President & CEO, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers "The BRI initiative provides fast access. Why you need the Belt and Road? It moves goods quickly to the target areas. It would do quickly you burn less fuel in the train, the truck and the bus and the train also. If you can find a way to make it more efficient, you will use less fuel to do the same job. So BRI initiative is doing this big picture issue, infrastructure issue."
In the decade following the proposal of the Belt and Road Initiative, the China Electricity Council says major power companies have completed over 110 projects with an investment exceeding 30-million US dollars in Belt and Road partner countries, with a total investment of more than 22-billion US dollars.
New energy investment, particularly since 2021, has also seen a significant rise.
XIN BAOAN Executive Chairman, State Grid Corporation of China "We will actively participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, promote the construction of cross-border power corridors, carry out regional power grid construction cooperation, continue to expand the scale of cross-border power grids, and promote the optimal allocation and sharing of power resources on a larger scale and with higher efficiency."
GAO ANG Xiamen, Fujian Province "Officials are also calling for the Asia-Pacific region to become a leader in tackling global climate change, driving the low-carbon and green energy transition, and power technology innovation. Gao Ang, CGTN, Xiamen, Fujian Province."
