Nearly four-thousand athletes from more than 40 countries and regions will take part in the week-long Games. And CGTN's Wang Menjie spoke to Singaporean lawn bowler Khir-mern Mohamad about his hopes for the competition.

KHIRMERN MOHAMAD Singaporean Lawn Bowler "I hope by having podium finishes, that would trigger more kind of reputation to bring in more people into our sports."

You just throw the ball, and watch where it lands...Lawn bowls wasn't exactly his cup of tea, when Khirmern Mohamad started playing almost a decade ago.

KHIRMERN MOHAMAD Singaporean Lawn Bowler "But after I got involved intensely and seriously in this sport, I just thought this is more than just letting go of your ball to the jack. It's mental strategies and everything. So, this is a sport of choice for me, lawn bowls."

Mohamad's left leg was amputated after he was injured in a bicycle accident.

"Before I was disabled, I didn't take life seriously and I was not responsible in what I'm doing. But in this life, I'm being committed in life. And then whatever that I do is like for moving forwards. That's what really motivates me to just go on to have a better life."

"After a hard day's in work, you really have to push yourself and come to training. I'm hoping to gain something new in my new life. Life goes on, as they say."

HELEN Singaporean Lawn Bowls Coach "Our role is to identify athletes who have the podium potential and then to prepare them, get them ready so that they can achieve podium reality."

"What would be your choice for this case?"

"My response is a forehand shot."

"Alright, I agree with that."

HELEN Singaporean Lawn Bowls Coach "So, we want him to have a very strong ability to be able to deliver the bowls at different distances, and then the second thing, of course, in terms of psychology, to remain calm and positive all the time. Because the game is very long drawn, so it's something very important.”

"Khirmen is a very motivated athlete. And if they have self-motivation, I think they will know how to conduct themselves and prepare for their tournament."

With the 4th Asian Para Games just around the corner, this go-getter is aiming high.

KHIRMERN MOHAMAD Singaporean Lawn Bowler "I would like to achieve, gold medal or podium finish this time, because my prolonged ambition is like to be a full-time athlete. And then I could contribute back to our Lawn Bowl Society."
