Resuming talks for peace on the basis of the two-state solution is the only way to break the vicious circle of the Palestine-Israel conflict, Zhai Jun, China's special envoy on the Middle East issue, said on Saturday. 

Zhai made the remarks during the meeting with Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS) Ahmed Aboul Gheit on the sidelines of the Cairo Summit for Peace on the Palestinian Question and had an exchange of views on the current Palestine-Israel situation.

Zhai said that China is saddened by the many civilian casualties caused by the Palestine-Israel conflict and the sharp deterioration of the humanitarian situation. He added that China calls for an early ceasefire, an end to war and efforts to carry out humanitarian rescue and assistance to avoid a humanitarian disaster.

The root cause of the Palestinian question lies in the long delay in realizing the dream of an independent State of Palestine, he said, stressing that resuming talks for peace on the basis of the two-state solution is the only way to resolve the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Zhai said China and the LAS share similar positions on the Palestinian question, and China firmly supports the LAS in playing an important role in this question. China supports relevant Arab states in carrying out mediation to promote the early deescalation of the situation, he added. 

Gheit said that Gaza is currently faced with a dangerous situation and a serious disaster. The pressing task is to urge for a ceasefire, stop fighting and provide humanitarian rescue and assistance for the people in Gaza as soon as possible, he added. 

The international community has the responsibility to take actions to resume talks for peace at an early date and promote a political settlement of the Palestinian question, Gheit said.

The LAS highly appreciates China's objective and just position on the Palestinian question and stands ready to maintain close communication with China to make concerted efforts to end the conflict between Palestine and Israel and restart the Middle East peace process, he added. 

The Chinese envoy also met with Assistant Minister of the Palestine Department in the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Osama Khedr on the Palestine-Israel situation. Zhai said China is deeply concerned over the current escalation of tensions and violence between Palestine and Israel, calling for an immediate ceasefire and opening humanitarian relief channels as soon as possible. 

China has provided emergency humanitarian assistance to Palestine through the United Nations, he noted. He also commended Egypt's efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and supported its efforts to open a humanitarian corridor in Gaza. 

Khedr highly appreciated China's long-standing just position on the Palestinian question and emphasized that a full and just settlement of the Palestinian question should be promoted in accordance with relevant resolutions of the United Nations and on the basis of the two-state solution. 

He said the current humanitarian situation in Gaza is critical, urging more aid deliveries to Gaza.
