A Chinese research team set up a multi-function automated weather station at an altitude of 5,896 meters on Kunlun Mountains in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Sunday.

The station is currently the highest weather station on Kunlun Mountains, marking the completion of the observation station network in the middle section of the mountains, the northern slope of Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.

The team comprises experts from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Meteorological Service.

According to Lu Riyu, a researcher from the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences, the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is "getting warm and wet" and southern Xinjiang has seen increasing number of extreme weather events. Analyzing the evolution of water vapor could be the key to revealing the mechanism and potential effects of climate change, Lu said.

The new weather station will provide more local weather data, supplementing the research on high-altitude weather, weather change and precipitation on Kunlun Mountains.
