Dr. Justine Coulson, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative in China, said in an interview with CGTN that when she first came to Beijing and went for a run in the Chaoyang Park, she was astounded by the hundreds of older people who were out doing exercise, dancing or walking dogs. She hasn't seen anything like this anywhere else in the world. Dr. Coulson said that old people are not just people who need to benefit from care. They are in their own right being active members of communities, societies and families. She believes China's aging population is a positive outcome of successful socioeconomic development. This needs to be celebrated. And China is moving quickly enough in terms of creating future capacity for the aging population. But, she believes that we also need to recognize that institutionalized care is not the only care option that older people need. Dr. Coulson pointed out that we need to think of a more innovative care model that will allow older people to retain some level of independence and remain in the communities as they wish.
