There are 24 solar terms in traditional Chinese culture that observe the changes in the seasons, astronomy and other natural phenomena. Frost's Descent, the 18th solar term of the year, falls on October 24 this year. It's the last solar term of the autumn season, which marks the transition from late autumn into winter.

During Frost's Descent, most regions in China experience a drop in temperatures combined with the first appearance of frost. While some crops and fruit start to show signs of weathering, others become ripe - such as pears, apples and persimmons.
During this season, people may feel cold and experience dryness. These types of fruit can help to relieve this discomfort. Persimmons are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which are beneficial to health. Apples of various nutritional value can help to moisten the lungs, improve immunity and aid digestion. And pears are believed to counter sore throats and help nourish and rehydrate our bodies.

People in some regions of China hold festivals and cultural rituals to mark the day. The Zhuang ethnic group in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region celebrates the Frost's Descent Festival every year. During the festival, they offer sacrifices, stage traditional performances, and take part in a range of activities to celebrate the autumn harvest - where they offer thanksgivings to nature and pray for the next harvest.

To better understand the seasons, astronomy and other natural phenomena, the ancient Chinese looked at the sun's circular motion and divided it into 24 segments called solar terms. The system has been adopted by a list of Asian countries and the 24 solar terms were listed as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2016.
