This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has hosted a reception and dinner in honor of the occasion. Wang Yi says a stable and mutually beneficial relationship is vital for both countries, and both sides should bring the relations back to the right track. Wang says understanding the Taiwan question bears on the political foundation of those relations. The Chinese foreign minister expressed hope the Japanese side will return to the original intention of signing the treaty, bear in mind the lessons from history, be vigilant against moves inciting the Taiwan question, and ensure that the political foundation of China-Japan relations will not be affected by this. The two sides signed their Treaty of Peace and Friendship in August 1978, six years after the normalization of diplomatic ties. It took effect on October 23 that year.
