Discussions on climate action are a major focus during California governor Gavin Newsom's visit to China. On Tuesday morning, he visited a bus depot in Shenzhen, to learn more about the city's all-electric bus fleet. Cao Chufeng reports.

On Tuesday morning, Governor of the US state of California, Gavin Newsom, inspected the Antuo Hill Bus Depot in China's southern metropolis of Shenzhen. Shenzhen is the first major city around the world to transition to an all-electric bus fleet and taxi fleet, with around 16,000 electric buses. And Newsom's priorities are getting to know more about the requirements to support such a big green system, and to reinforce partnerships.

GAVIN NEWSOM Governor of California "We are here because of the scale and the scope. This is not small. You guys are doing in a level that's not been done anywhere else in the globe. So we are here in that light, that aspiration. And also, in the spirit of partnership, as you said, we've been working together for decades."

California has historically been among the largest oil-producers in the United States. But Governor Newsom is aiming to phase out fossil fuels to tackle climate change. In Shenzhen, the transition to all-green public transport system took 8 years, and getting enough charging facilities was one of the biggest challenges.

ETHAN MA Shenzhen Bus Group "At the very beginning, we really faced the big challenge of not having enough land and bus charging facilities in Shenzhen. You know we have a very huge bus fleet, we cannot afford at the beginning to have one terminal for one bus, so we had to develop multi-gun on charge and technology."

Newsom also took a test drive of a Chinese-produced electric car, and he seemed quite impressed.

GAVIN NEWSOM Governor of California "This is a preview of things to come, and this we don't have yet in United States, but the fact is so much that technology, that inspiration, that R&D we developed, but it's now been transferred across the globe."

CAO CHUFENG Shenzhen "California and China have a long history in collaboration in various sectors, including on tackling climate change. Newsom's visit is seen as crucial to reinforce such collaboration. And he's got many things on his agenda, such as meeting officials, signing MOUs, and visiting clean green energy facilities.
