"We have so far 5,000 laborers displaced from their work in Israel to the West Bank," a Palestinian official told CGTN when talking about how the current Israel-Hamas conflict has affected the West Bank.
"We have now 5,000 people added to the labor market. Here, they are fully unemployed and we couldn't employ them because the unemployment here in the West Bank is very high as well," said Samer Salemeh, Palestine's deputy minister of labor.
After the October 7 attack by the Palestinian armed group Hamas, Israel reportedly closed checkpoints linking the West Bank with Jerusalem. Local people say it is impossible for Palestinians to enter Israel, except for those holding permits for medical treatment. Traveling between cities in the West Bank has also become difficult.
