The 4th Hangzhou Asian Para Games has wrapped up in Hangzhou tonight. On Friday, Chinese swimmer Jiang Shengnan claimed gold in the women's 50m freestyle S-8 final. Her husband, Paralympic champion swimmer Song Maodang, was pool-side. Wu Bin has the story of their shared love for the sport.
"Baby, look over there."
Song Maodang is a Paralympic champion swimmer. Today is very important for him.
Reporter: I see a lot of friends coming today. Are they here to cheer up Jiang Shengnan?
Song: Yes, a lot of people, many of them came voluntarily. Many more than I expected.
Jiang Shengnan is Song's wife, and a champion swimmer in her own right. She's competing at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.
"Mom, cheer up!"
Jiang Shengnan, a new Asian record.
Song and Jiang's story goes back to 2010, when Song was selected for the national team.
At the time, Jiang has already taken part in an international swimming contest and claimed the championship.
SONG MAODANG Paralympic Champion Swimmer "I was a little brother, but she was already the big sister in the swimming team."
Unlike Jiang, Song didn't think he had the talent to swim competitively, but trained extremely hard.
That left an impression on the team and led to a romance.
JIANG SHENGNAN Swimmer, Team China Hangzhou Asian Para Games "I didn't notice him at first, but our coach always mentioned him, saying how hard-working and active he is in training. [The coach] asked us to learn from him, and watch him training, and then I started noticing him."
Although their roads to swimming are different, Song and Jiang believe the sport brings them something special – confidence.
They support each other, learn from each other, and break records together. In 2016, Song and Jiang both claimed gold medals at the Rio Paralympics.
Song even broke the world record in the men's 100m butterfly S-8. He was the first swimmer in this category to finish the race in less than one minute.
SONG MAODANG Paralympic Champion Swimmer "In 2016, my result is 59.19 seconds. What made me excited is not only winning the gold medal, but also leading the world record that much."
After the Rio Paralympics, they welcomed a daughter and decided to focus on family. But the Hangzhou Para Asian Games gave them both the urge to participate. Song became a flag bearer at the opening ceremony.
And Jiang decided to return to the competition arena.
JIANG SHENGNAN Swimmer, Team China Hangzhou Asian Para Games "It's in China, in Hangzhou. I'm looking forward to being part of it. It would be a pity for me if I didn't participate."
After winning, Jiang was surrounded by friends and families who congratulate her. Song, as an observer and supporter, joked that he is the man behind a successful woman. For Jiang, the gold medal is special because this time their daughter is also watching.
JIANG SHENGNAN Swimmer, Team China Hangzhou Asian Para Games "Being a mom is more of a motivation, I want to set an example for my daughter to be brave, resilient, courageous and strong."
