The San Francisco 49ers acquired defensive end Chase Young by trading with the Washington Commanders before the National Football League (NFL) trade deadline on Tuesday, the 49ers announced on the day.
It cost the 49ers, which are likely to have 12 draft picks for 2024, only a third-rounder to land Young. Having been drafted by the Commanders in 2020 with the second overall pick in 2020, he was named for the Pro Bowl in his first season and became the Defensive Rookie of the Year. This season, Young had five sacks in seven games and caused 16 incompletions, the fourth most in the league.
However, the Commanders decided not to exercise Young's fifth-year option during the offseason, not only to save $17.452 million for the 2024 season but also out of concern for his health. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and ruptured his patellar tendon in 2021. He also missed the season opener due to a neck injury.
The 49ers have been desperate to improve their lineup after their recent three-game losing streak.
"If we think there is a chance to improve us, we'll do it," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday. "It doesn't sound like there's a lot of options out there but doesn't mean for sure no. I know we'll look up that all the way up to the deadline and see if anything changes."

The Commanders also did the Chicago Bears a favor by agreeing to send defensive end Montez Sweat to the windy city in exchange for a second-round pick, according to ESPN on Tuesday. He will have to pass a physical.
"Montez is a huge addition to our team," the Bears' general manager Ryan Poles said. "He is not only a great player but a great person. We expect him to help elevate our defense."
Sweat is in the final year of his contract. Instead of scratching their brains over his contract extension issue, the Commanders, who are 3-5 after eight games, decided to turn him into a draft pick.
Sweat tallied 6.5 sacks, 32 tackles and 11 quarterback hits in eight games this season. Only seven players had at least five sacks in each of the past five seasons, including Sweat. The other six are Chris Jones, Myles Garrett, T.J. Watt, Khalil Mack, Maxx Crosby and Brian Burns.
