The Ministry of Natural Resources and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration on Wednesday updated the elevations of nine famous mountains for the first time since the 1960s.
Compared with the original data, Yangmaiyong Mountain, one of the three holy mountains in Daocheng County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, standing at an altitude of 5,958 meters above sea level previously, has the biggest change, with an increase of 75 meters in height. While the Gongga Mountain, which is popular among the locals as "The King of Sichuan Mountains," has a decrease of 47.1 meters.
The elevations measured using the techniques of Global Satellite Navigation System (GNSS) and space photogrammetry is more accurate than previous data, reflecting advances in surveying and mapping.
Experts noted that the changes in the elevations are also related to the crustal movements and the melting of glaciers due to global warming.
