Hainan Doll Opera is a form of intangible cultural heritage integrating literature, art, music and drama dating back over 600 years. It combines many different operatic forms and local folk stories.

Tradition has it that many locals are Hainan Doll Opera practitioners who have passed down their skills from generation to generation. An opera troupe can be formed by just a few people. Actors who play an instrument are called "wen pai," and those who operate puppets are called "shi gong." The opera is usually performed at celebrations such as festivals and weddings.
