At least 80 killed after M6.4 earthquake in Nepal

At least 80 people were killed and 140 others injured in Nepal on Friday when a strong earthquake struck the western area of Jajarkot, local newspaper Kathmandu Post reported on Saturday.

The report said 44 people were killed in Jajarkot district while in neighboring Rukum West district, 36 deaths had been reported.

Nepal's National Seismological Center said the magnitude-6.4 quake occurred at 11:47 p.m. (1802 GMT) in Jajarkot district of Karnali province, a hilly region. 

The tremor was also felt in many places in Nepal including capital Kathmandu.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of life and property in the quake and ordered security agencies to launch immediate rescue and relief operations, in a post on social media platform X.
