UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday said he was horrified by the reported attack in Gaza on an ambulance convoy outside Al Shifa hospital as he renewed appeals for a humanitarian ceasefire.

"Now, for nearly one month, civilians in Gaza, including children and women, have been besieged, denied aid, killed, and bombed out of their homes. This must stop," he said in a statement.

"International humanitarian law must be respected. Civilians and civilian infrastructure, including humanitarian and medical workers and assets must be protected. Civilians must also not be used as human shields," said Guterres.

Israel's Defense Ministry has confirmed an ambulance in Gaza was struck but said the vehicle was being used by Hamas militants and accused the group of transferring militants and weapons in it.

The Israel Defense Forces said Hamas fighters who were operating within the ambulance were neutralized, without saying how many were killed.

But the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza said the Israeli strike on the ambulance, which it said was used to evacuate the wounded from besieged northern Gaza, killed 15 people and injured 60 others.
