Biden says progress made on humanitarian pause in Gaza

CGTN

U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday said "yes" when asked by reporters whether any progress has been made on the prospect of a humanitarian pause in the conflict in Gaza, but did not give further details.

The remark came as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was on visits to Israel and Jordan and Arab leaders publicly pressed the U.S. to help secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

As he stood next to his Jordanian and Egyptian counterparts at a press conference in Jordan, Blinken reaffirmed America's support for "humanitarian pauses" in Gaza that would allow aid deliveries in and for civilians to move freely to safe places.

But in a rare open display of disagreement with Arab leaders, he said reaching an immediate ceasefire in Gaza would enable the Hamas movement to regroup its forces.

On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rebuffed a pause proposal from Blinken after a day of meetings, demanding hostages first be released by Hamas.
