Beijing en route to building a greener city

Beijing has expanded its green space by implementing a series of measures including afforestation, selecting more plant varieties and building "pocket parks".

The Chinese capital has inserted 323 small "pocket parks" and other small-sized green spaces around residential areas on top of its urban layout over the past five years.

Multiple rounds of afforestation projects were also carried out.

To improve the city's scenery, Beijing also selected over 160 plant varieties to greatly increase the area of woods with colorful leaves.

"There have been really big changes in the past few years. The flowers, plants and trees on the roadsides are becoming more beautiful and more colorful than before. People can enjoy life better in such an environment," said Ding Zhijie, a resident.

While continuously expanding green space, Beijing is also actively exploring ways to utilize the green spaces to boost its economy.

In recent years, ecotourism has gained further traction among consumers, with a weekend escape in countryside home stays, fruit picking, camping, and outdoor photography among the most popular recreational activities.

"During the golden autumn leaf viewing season, we had 12,000 visitors a day at peak times. Our boutique home stays are basically fully booked on weekends. Our whole town has benefited greatly," said Zhou Sunwen, Party secretary of Shicheng Town of Beijing's Miyun District.

Until now, Beijing's forest coverage rate has reached 44.8 percent. The city's forest area with colorful leaves has exceeded 17,8000 hectares.
