The Israeli army severed northern Gaza from the rest of the besieged territory and pounded it with air strikes on November 6, preparing for ground battles with Hamas. The Palestinian death toll has surpassed 10,000, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip. Both Israel and Hamas militants who control Gaza have rebuffed mounting international pressure for a ceasefire.
