Heavy snowfall hits China's northeast - Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces issue red alerts for snowstorms

01:12

China has issued red alerts for snowstorms in Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, the highest level of its meteorological warning system, and temperatures have slumped.

CGTN's Guan Yang is on his way to Huanan County in Heilongjiang Province where three people were confirmed dead and another was injured after a gymnasium collapsed Monday evening.

Major highways in the city of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, were closed. The bad weather has also caused delays and cancellations in trains and flights. Elementary schools were shut on Monday in parts of Heilongjiang as well as neighboring Jilin and Liaoning provinces. People were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay indoors where possible.

The National Meteorological Center said that the snowfall is likely to "break through historical records" for the same period. Since midnight yesterday, thousands of road cleaners across the region had been working around the clock to sweep snow and ice.

Although the rescue operations have ended, the investigation into the gymnasium collapse is continuing. It is yet to be determined whether the accident was related to the extreme weather.
