In the tiny village of Bogdal in northwest China's Xinjiang near Kazakhstan, most of the residents are of Mongolian ethnicity. Their ancestors were sent there from eastern China to set up military posts, and their descendants have garrisoned the border ever since. These days, together with local Han, Kazakh and Uyghur people, the local farmers and herdsmen there are turning their history into tourism attractions, creating new economic opportunities.
