A 145 megawatt (MW) floating solar power plant, the largest in Southeast Asia, was connected to the power grid on Monday in West Java, Indonesia, according to the Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina), its developer.

Located on the Cirata Reservoir, about 130 kilometers away from Indonesian capital Jakarta, the plant is expected to provide power for 50,000 households, said the company.

Apart from easing the power supply tension, it will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve the country's goal of having 23 percent of its energy mix coming from renewables by 2025.

A report from pv magazine, a media platform writing on solar issues, in September said that the project's two managing companies announced to more than triple the size of the plant to 500 MW, without saying when the expansion would be complete.
