Canada beat Italy 2-0 to claim their maiden Billie Jean King Cup title on Sunday, with two singles victories from Marina Stakusic and Leylah Fernandez, respectively.

Finals debutante Canada, who had only made it to the semifinal round once before in 1988, had an impressive display run in what's considered the most important women's tennis team tournament this year.

Stakusic, who is ranked No. 258 in the world, put Canada ahead by beating Martina Trevisan 7-5, 6-3 in the opening singles match. Trevisan had been in incredible form in Seville, arriving at the final unbeaten, until the Canadian 18-year-old proved that team tournaments are very different from individual events when she took a victory from 43rd-ranked Trevisan, who won her first WTA Tour singles title at the Rabat Grand Prix in 2022.

In the second singles match later, 2021 U.S. Open runner-up Fernandez downed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-3 in only 99 minutes, making her side the 13th team to win the tournament, for which they pocketed a prize of $2.4 million.

Canada and Italy previously downed 11-time winners the Czech Republic and Slovenia, respectively, to set up the final clash. Canada had the memory of a 3-0 win over Italy in the 2022 group stage, and in Fernandez, they had a player who went into Sunday's tie after winning 15 of her last 16 matches in the competition.
