Some 3,400 residents of the fishing town of Grindavik in southwest Iceland evacuated their homes on Saturday due to growing fears of a volcanic eruption. Civil defense officials have declared a state of emergency in the area and the aviation alert has been raised to orange, indicating a higher risk of volcanic eruption. According to the Icelandic Met Office, around 1,400 earthquakes were measured in the 24 hours between November 8 and November 9, with another 800 in the first 14 hours of November 10.
