Chas W. Freeman, senior U.S. diplomat and main interpreter for President Richard Nixon during his 1972 China visit, said that though China has been clear in not wanting relations with the U.S. to deteriorate, these sentiments have not been reciprocated by the U.S. "Decoupling can work both ways. I don't think necessarily it is to the advantage of one side and the disadvantage necessarily of the other," he said.
