The Major League Baseball (MLB) announced on Tuesday the winners of the Manager of the Year awards: Brandon Hyde of the Baltimore Orioles won the American League (AL) honor and Skip Schumaker of the Miami Marlins won the National League (NL) award.

Hyde received 27 of the 30 first-place votes, beating Bruce Bochy of the Rangers and Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL race. Hide led the Orioles to win 101 regular-season games in 2023, the second-most wins of all 30 teams. It was their first 100+win season since 1980. The team made it back to the playoffs in seven years, but they lost to the Texas Rangers 3-0 in the AL Division Series.

"I'm super proud of our organization and how far we've come, exceeding expectations the last two years," Hyde said. "We had a great season this year. It's been quite a journey and a long road, but I'm super happy to be a Baltimore Oriole and how far we've come in five years."

Unlike Hyde who managed the Orioles for five seasons, Schumaker only took over the Marlins in October 2022. In his first season with the team, he improved their record from 69-93 to 84-78 and took them again to the playoffs since 2020. It was the team's second post season trip in 20 years.

Though the Marlins lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 in the NL Wild Card Series, the Manager of the Year voting factors in only regular-season results.

There were a total of six managers receiving first-place votes. Brian Snitker of the Atlanta Braves tied with Schumaker at eight. The Chicago Cubs' Craig Counsell, who was managing the Milwaukee Brewers last season, finished in the second place.

"I think we set a new standard in that clubhouse and now it's time to protect the standard," Schumaker said. "I told that to the guys after losing the series to a really good Phillies team and I just felt like the culture kind of changed. They know what winning looked like. They know what to expect now. After you get a taste of that postseason, you just want to get back there any way you can, and that's the next step for our organization."
