Nestled in the heart of Woodside, California, just 25 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli, also known as the Bourn-Roth Estate, stands as a testament to the rich history and cross-cultural influences that have shaped this magnificent country house. The site is both a California Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built between 1915 and 1917 for William Bowers Bourn II, a titan in California's gold mining industry and the president of the Spring Valley Water Company, Filoli served as one of the Bourns' residences from 1917 to 1936.

The name of the estate is an acronym formed by combining the first two letters from the key words of William Bourn's credo: "Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life." Today, owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Filoli welcomes visitors from all around the world.

Filoli Estate integrates characteristics of English country gardens with the native landscapes of California and draws inspiration from Chinese garden design in many of its elements. For instance, there is a winding artificial stream within the gardens, reminds of streams found in Chinese gardens. The gardens also feature a variety of traditional Chinese flowers and plants, such as peonies and bamboo.

The main house is a two-story building, showcasing a luxurious interior. This architectural style blends English country and California native styles, influenced by traditional Chinese architecture.

Moreover, the estate's collection includes two Chinese pottery figures, Chang'e and Hou Yi. There is also a large Chinese-style double-sided screen and a painting depicting playful children.

As a California Historical Landmark and a proud entry on the National Register of Historic Places, Filoli invites visitors to embark on a journey through time and culture. According to the official website, Filoli Estate attracts over 300,000 visitors annually, including many from China. It provides Chinese visitors with an opportunity to explore Western Garden culture and facilitates cultural exchange between China and the United States.
