At the Jinci Temple in north China's Shanxi Province, one of the most important historical sites in the country, there are more than a hundred ancient trees that are hundreds or even thousands of years old.
However, these old and valuable trees in the temple have been threatened by wind-rain erosion and other natural disasters, with their branches drying out and even the entire tree facing death.
In order to save the trees, the temple rescued and protected ancient trees recently by using non-destructive testing and stabilization methods and techniques. For the trees in urgent need of treatment, the protection team improved the site condition and sped up the rooting process. For the trees that are rotting and on the verge of collapsing, the team carried out preservative maintenance, filling holes and stabilizing the trunk.

On Friday, Jinci Temple was awarded with the provincial scientific research demonstration base for the protection of ancient and precious trees, with 122 registered ancient trees, including 29 millennium-old trees.
As "living fossils," ancient trees often contain genes for longevity and resistance, which can be valuable for the genetic improvement of plants. Also, the trees have significant value for biological research, as their annual ring structures can provide insights into changes in climate, hydrology, geology, geography, biology and ecology, according to experts.
