People from the Yi ethnic group gathered in Bijie City, Guizhou Province to celebrate their traditional New Year with a range of activities, from sports competitions and tug-of-war games to local feasts and folk performances. Yi people consider their traditional New Year to be one of the most important events of the year, where they offer sacrifices to ancestors, pray for a good harvest, and offer blessings. This folk festival was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2011.
