Twenty-eight premature babies arrived in Egypt in a convoy of ambulances from Gaza on Monday, according to an Egyptian government official, after they were evacuated from Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza.

"Each of them has serious infections and quite a few of them have a low body temperature and so they really do need detailed specialist care," Dr. Rick Brennan of the World Health Organization (WHO) said in an interview.

The newborns had been patients at Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest medical facility, where medical services collapsed due to a lack of fuel following Israel's retaliatory ground and air attack on Gaza City. They were sent to the Al-Hilal Hospital in southern Gaza before being taken to Egypt for further treatment.

A CGTN stringer on Monday talked to Mohamed Salama, the head of its Neonatal Unit, to learn more about the condition of the babies.
