China's expressway nework in operation had reached 177,000 kilometers by the end of 2022, and China remains the country with the longest expressway network in the world, the Ministry of Transport said on Thursday.

In the past decade, the country's highway network has been constantly improved in terms of both length and quality, with a number of major highway projects completed, Guo Sheng, an official with the ministry, told a press conference.

By the end of 2022, China's total highway network had reached 5.35 million kilometers, an increase of 1.12 million kilometers in the space of 10 years, said Guo, adding that the number of China's six-lane (and above) national highway sections has also been increased by 18,400 kilometers in a decade.

In the future, China will further optimize its highway network, striving to build a modern highway infrastructure system to ensure mobility of people and goods, Guo added.
